Tour & Lunch Presentation: The Green Garage

June 23, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
4444 2nd Avenue
Detroit, MI 48201 United States
+ Google Map

ESD members will join the Green Garage community lunch at noon. ESD will provide a boxed lunch for member-attendees. The Green Garage lunch will be open to additional community partners. Building these connections is vital to Detroit's sustainable future. ESD members will be introduced to the work of the Green Garage, a green home for nearly 50 small businesses and nonprofits. They will hear an ESD-tailored presentation on GG's environmental footprint. Following the lunch, ESD members will participate in a technical tour of the building and Green Garage's operations.

The once Model T Dealership Garage has become a Net Zero Energy building – a model of sustainability. The Green Garage is an excellent example of a collaborative that still maintains the integrity of the historical site; a marriage of history and technology. It hosts nearly 50 small businesses, nonprofit organizations, and independent professionals. See and hear about the many features of this "off the grid" site, which include: solar photovoltaic panels, heat pump, rainwater catchment, porous pavers, use of graywater, reclaimed wood, composting and radiant flooring.

October 23, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
20700 Civic Center Drive
Southfield, MI 48076 United States
+ Google Map

This presentation will provide an overview of the underlying and enabling science involved in the currently popular subject of "light weighting". It is intended to help both new and experienced individuals with some technical background to get a better appreciation of this subject. Pertinent terminology will be defined and basic engineering concepts that influence weight and various methods for its reduction will be discussed. Other topics that will be covered include notions of loads, stresses and deflections along with concepts of strength and stiffness as they relate to material properties in relationship to weight. Also reviewed will be other critical material characteristics that must be considered in making the technical and economic choices involved in light weighting of mechanical structural elements of a product's design.
