Presenter: Dr. Quamrul Mazumder, Professor, Mechanical Engineering, University of Michigan-Flint

The importance of engineering standards in design and development of products and systems are important.  However, most of the engineering curriculum or courses do not include any topics that teaches about standards to students by focus on classical problem-solving approach from textbooks and software.  The lack of knowledge about standards underprepares entry level engineers as they become overwhelmed with different standards, specifications, processes that are required by employers.  The lack of understanding of engineering standards is also observed in engineers with several years of experience as a professional engineer.

The objective of this seminar is to provide knowledge and understanding of why standards are important, different types of standards, benefit of standards and resources available.  After the seminar the participants will develop in depth understanding of different types of engineering standards and their application.  The following is a list of some of the topics that will be covered.

  • The “Mystery” of Standards
  • What is a Standard?
  • Types of Standards for Composites
  • Benefits of Standards
  • Basic Standards Knowledge for Engineers
  • Education in Standards
  • Resources available to learn about standards and applications.

Dr. Quamrul Mazumder is currently a professor of Mechanical Engineering at University of Michigan-Flint since 2006. Prior to his academic position, he worked in aerospace and turbomachinery industry for 18 years as a product design engineer and engineering manager.  His research areas include quality improvement in engineering education and praticulated multiphase flow using computational and experimental methods.  Dr. Mazumder published more that 65 journal and conference papers, three books and served in editorial board of several journals. He is registered professional engineer.
