Presenter: James L. Newman, CEM, LEED AP BD+C, ASHRAE OPMP & BEAP, FESD
As we prepare to leave the comfort of our homes and “re-open” buildings, the health and safety of all remains top-of-mind. Nothing about building maintenance will be normal – perhaps for quite a while. During this session, Jim Newman will discuss how our HVAC systems direct and drive building wellness and the extra precautions building owners and managers must enact to ensure safety and prevent, or at least minimize, potential litigation.
Jim Newman is one of the country’s most experienced energy efficiency and green building experts. Known as the “Dean of Green,” Jim regularly speaks across the U.S. and internationally to professionals, student groups and the media about sustainability and green technology.
Jim is Owner/Managing Partner of Newman Consulting Group, LLC (NCG) headquartered in Farmington Hills. He is a Certified Energy Manager (CEM), a LEED Accredited Professional, an ASHRAE Operations and Performance Management Professional (OPMP) and Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP), an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer (DL), and a Fellow of ESD.
An active member of many technical societies, he has received many awards. Some of his latest are ESD’s TechCentury Image Award in 2018 and the Ann O. Fletcher Distinguished Service Award in 2019. He also received the BOMA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.
Jim is a trainer for ASHRAE Energy Standard 90.1, the basis for building codes in most states, and has trained hundreds of architects, engineers, code officials and contractors on the use of the Standard. NCG is a major provider of PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) tax assessments to assist building owners to make deep energy retrofits and to have the ability to pay for them in a cash-flow positive manner over a 20-25 year tax assessment.
Today, because of the COVID-19 Pandemic he is working with building owners, facility managers and building engineers to help them improve indoor air quality and reduce bacteria and viruses from the air in their buildings before and after people return to work.
Jim received a BSME from Tufts University, Boston, MA, and continued his education for an MBA degree at the University of Detroit and Wayne State University. He and his wife Lynn have three children and 7 grandchildren. His passion is to leave the world a better place for them.
